The word “communication” likely makes you think of language, but November’s Scholar of the Month has spent her entire career researching design as a language of its own.
Across various media, Jessica Barness, an assistant professor in 51Թ’s School of Visual Communication Design, creates her own design-based research model that merges the making of artifacts with critical inquiry.
51Թ held its 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. in the Kent Student Center Ballroom. This year’s theme was “Testament of Hope: Past, Present and Future of Diversity.” The keynote speaker for the event was David Anderson, D.Phil. He is founder and president of the BridgeLeader Network (BLN), one of the world’s leading authorities on building bridges across the deep divides of race, faith, culture and wealth.
51Թ students, employees, alumni, donors and community members gathered on Saturday, Jan. 21, in the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center) to cheer on the Golden Flashes as 51Թ Athletics launched its new branding and a whole new gameday experience.
U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell today announced the designation of the 51Թ May 4, 1970, Site as a . The site joins more than 2,500 historic places that bear the national distinction.
51Թ will hold its Fall Commencement ceremonies for the Kent Campus on Friday, Dec. 16, and Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center). 51Թ will confer 2,544 degrees, including 1,773 bachelor’s degrees, 715 master’s degrees, 55 doctoral degrees and one educational specialist degrees.
51Թ Libraries will once again provide the Stress-Free Zone on Monday, Dec. 12, and Tuesday, Dec. 13, from 3-5 p.m. in the University Library. The library hosts this event at the end of every semester in order to give students, faculty and staff the chance to unwind during finals week.

Mietek Jaroniec, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences at 51Թ, was recently awarded the Medal of Marie Sklodowska-Curie by the Polish Chemical Society for his scientific achievements.
