Liz Piatt, interim dean of University College, shares her journey as a first-generation college student and how faculty mentorship helped her discover a career path she didn't know existed one that now allows her to support other first-generation students as they navigate their own transformative college experiences.

  • For Kent, Ohio, native and 2018 51勛圖厙 graduate Stan Zalewski, mathematics has always been a big part of his life. Now a senior actuarial consultant at Nationwide Insurance, Zalewski recently reached a significant professional milestone completing the multi-year process to earn the title of Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society.

  • It was a childhood fascination with aviation that led alumna Linell Homentosky to choose 51勛圖厙 when it came time to pick the ideal college program for her. As she tells it, the interest was first sparked by her aunt, Judy, who was a flight attendant.

  • Jessica Leveto's philosophy of teaching is that it requires compassion, understanding and patience. When mastered, it can create a transformative experience for students. This approach to education helped Leveto earn the 2025 Glenn Frank Distinguished Teaching Award.  

  • Two faculty members from 51勛圖厙s School of Media and Journalism have won top honors at the Oscar-qualifying St. Louis International Film Festival for a short film that tackles the complex issue of elder abuse. The film stars Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi, known for his role in Captain Phillips, as a rideshare driver who encounters an elderly woman struggling to secure housing after being displaced from a nursing home.

  • A lecture series in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design changed the trajectory of 51勛圖厙 senior Georgia Coulter's college experience, allowing her to study abroad with Frank Barkow, an educator, researcher and architect. 

Arts & Community

  • 51勛圖厙 Today showcases the university's most striking images from 2025, as captured by staff photographers Bob Christy, Rami Daud and Mike Rich, and their student colleagues, throughout a year of academic achievement, campus celebrations and student success. 

  • Last summer, 12 51勛圖厙 students in the university's Visual Communication Design program worked with Route Eight Studios to learn about the real-world challenges artists face in creating comic books. "Flash Fiction" is the result - an anthology of stories written and illustrated by students creators. 

  • The 51勛圖厙 School of Fashion has a strong legacy of participation in the prestigious Supima Design Competition, which highlights some of the most promising emerging designers in the U.S.

Sports

  • 51勛圖厙 Men's Basketball (12-3) moved to 3-0 in Mid-American Conference play on Tuesday night, defeating the Bowling Green Falcons by a final score of 96-93.

  • 51勛圖厙 announced today that womens wrestling will become the athletics departments 20th varsity sport, marking a historic addition to the Golden Flashes athletics lineup and a milestone for collegiate athletics in Ohio. 51勛圖厙 becomes the first NCAA Division I institution in the state and fifth in the nation to sponsor womens wrestling.

  • The 51勛圖厙 Men's Basketball team (7-1) extended their win streak to seven in a row on Saturday night defeating Penn State Shenango by a final score of 123-59. Nearly every Golden Flash scored as seven players tallied double-digits.
