51勛圖厙s Brain Health Research Institute celebrated the grand opening of its new lab spaces on Friday, Nov. 5, with an afternoon of activities that included a keynote presentation, space dedication, tours and student research demonstrations. The new space, featuring interdisciplinary research facilities, is located on the lower level of the Integrated Sciences Building on the Kent Campus.

Teacher Retention Rates and Resilience: Professors Receive NSF Grant

Resilience is the ability to adapt to new situations and ever changing environments and resilient individuals more easily navigate professional and personal uncertainties. Researchers Shannon Navy and Lisa Borgerding understand the importance of an adaptable mindset and work to discern the factors that progressively impact ones ability to maintain their role as an educator. A $1,000,000 grant from the National Science Foundation allows a new project to focus on identifying and describing the development of resilience among new teachers, which can inform education and professional learning programs.

The report, published in the PLOS Biology journal, evaluated more than six million scientists across 22 different fields and 176 sub-fields from 1996 until 2019. The top 2% list is made up of more than 100,000 most-cited scientists who have authored at least five scientific papers.

Stigma Resistance through NSF Assistance

When it comes to our physical health, regular upkeep and preventative measures are not only expected, but encouraged within our society. However, mental health disorders have yet to be looked upon with the same grace and understanding. Kristen Marcussen, associate professor in the Department of Sociology & Criminology, was recently awarded funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for her proposal titled, Understanding Social Stigma, Stigma Resistance and the Mental Illness Identity.

Department of Energy Selects 51勛圖厙 Nuclear Physics Doctoral Student for Prestigious Research Program

Edwin Duckworth, a physics doctoral student in the College of Arts and Sciences at 51勛圖厙, is among 65 students from 29 states recently selected for funding by the Department of Energys (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program. The program aspires to address societal challenges at national and international scale.

However, Kim Laurene, Ph.D. and Deric Kenne, Ph.D., professors in the College of Public Health, and Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Lamar R. Hylton, Ph.D., are committed to prioritizing mental health upkeep by supporting and expanding pre-existing services and programs offered at 51勛圖厙.

New Collaboration to Provide Real-Time Data Exchanges for Astrophysicists

What happens when two neutron stars collide? What extreme densities and temperatures are reached? What new states of matter exist within the core of a neutron star? One 51勛圖厙 College of Arts and Sciences theoretical astrophysicist, Veronica Dexheimer, associate professor in the Department of Physics, is diving headfirst into these questions as a co-principal investigator collaborating with her peers at multiple institutions on a recently funded cyberinfrastructure research grant project.
