University Housing is proud to recognize and celebrate the legacy of two remarkable women whose time at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø left a lasting impression on our community. Through scholarships established in their honor and memory, we support students who embody their spirit of service, creativity and connection.

The Randi E. McKenzie Scholarship

Established by 51³Ô¹ÏÍø alumna Randi E. McKenzie, Class of 1972, this scholarship reflects the profound impact that a single moment of kindness can have on a student’s life. Randi fondly remembers arriving at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø for orientation—excited yet overwhelmed—and being welcomed by her Resident Assistant in Verder Hall. That small gesture of support inspired her to become an RA herself during her senior year, and later to give back in a way that would continue to uplift future student leaders.

Randi went on to dedicate her career to higher education, retiring as Assistant Dean Emerita from San Diego State University. A proud first-generation college graduate and former student-athlete, she remains a strong supporter of student success. In addition to this scholarship, she has sponsored several others across campus, continuing her deep connection to 51³Ô¹ÏÍø and its mission.

Preference for the Randi E. McKenzie Scholarship is given to students who are currently serving, or have previously served, as Resident Assistants at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø.

Through her generous support, Randi honors the life-changing power of residence life and the student leaders who help create a sense of belonging for others—just as it was once created for her.

The Julie Lynn Leffingwell Scholarship

Julie Lynn Leffingwell began her 51³Ô¹ÏÍø journey in 1992, living in Terrace Hall and immersing herself in residence life, intramural sports, and the arts. A Crafts major with a talent for handmade banners and creative displays, Julie brought joy and warmth to the University Housing office in Korb Hall, where she worked throughout her college career.

Julie was more than a student employee—she was a vibrant, kind, and dependable presence who greeted visitors, assisted families and supported fellow students with a smile. She even created a training guide to help future receptionists succeed. Her time at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø helped shape her future and built a network of lifelong friendships that meant the world to her.

Julie passed away unexpectedly in December 1999. In memory of their daughter, Julie’s parents, Jim and Judy Leffingwell—both 51³Ô¹ÏÍø alumni—established this scholarship to honor her legacy and support future student employees of University Housing. With generous contributions over the years, including a principal gift-level bequest, the Leffingwells have ensured that Julie’s spirit of creativity, kindness, and service continues to impact 51³Ô¹ÏÍø students for generations to come.
