Planned Gift Endows Executive Director Position at 51Թ’s Wick Poetry Center
The Wick family has a long history of philanthropy at 51Թ that began in 1984 when brothers Bob and Walt Wick first established scholarships to support undergraduate poets at the university. This most recent gift of $1 million brings the family’s total lifetime commitment to the university to more than $3.5 million.
‘We Are the Community Maj Nurtured Into Speech’
“Maj wrote poems to, for and about this town, this home of his in Kent,” said David Hassler, director of the Wick Poetry Center in his remarks at the dedication of the Maj Ragain Poetry Park. “His poems gave shelter and solace and sustenance to our community, and it feels so right that we’re dedicating this poetry park today in his memory and his honor.”
Wick Prize Winner Farnaz Fatemi Receives Poet Laureate Fellowship From Academy of American Poets
Farnaz Fatemi, poet laureate of Santa Cruz County, California, was awarded a $50,000 fellowship from the Academy of American Poets that she will use in partnership with 51Թ's Wick Poetry Center to produce a series of teen poetry workshops. Fatemi is an Iranian-American poet and writer and the author of "Sister Tongue," published in 2022 by the 51Թ Press. She was the winner of the 2021 Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize, awarded annually by the Wick Poetry Center for a poet's first book of poems.

Sonyea Moore, a sophomore Honors student from Twinsburg, Ohio, is currently pursuing two majors and three minors in the College of Arts and Sciences and is thriving while doing so. Holding a 3.9 G.P.A., Sonyea is following her interests in the humanities through majors in anthropology and Africana studies, along with her minors in English, creative writing, and history. While the workload of such an education is demanding, Sonyea explains it's worth it to study her passions.

TEXTURES Exhibition Receives Arts Alive Award for Collaborative Project
The 51Թ Museum exhibition “TEXTURES: the history and art of Black hair” has been awarded the Arts Alive award for Collaborative Project for 2022. The exhibition was co-curated by Dr. Joseph Underwood, associate professor of art history, and Dr. Tameka Ellington, former associate professor of fashion and interim assistant dean for the College of the Arts.
Health and Well-Being of Students, Faculty and Staff Brought to Light by Healing Stanzas
Students across the nation were challenged as the pandemic swept the world. Healing Stanzas, a collaboration between the Wick Poetry Center, the Healthy Communities Research Institute and the Brain Health Research Institute, seeks to combine the science of brain health and public health with the creative energy of the humanities to provide 51Թ students, staff and faculty with an opportunity to improve wellness through reflective poetry.
