The 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Women’s Center in the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will celebrate its 20th anniversary during the 2016-17 school year. The Women’s Center, formerly called the Women’s Resource Center, was established in 1996 following a recommendation from a university stakeholder committee to former 51³Ô¹ÏÍø President Carol A. Cartwright. The center was established with a specific purpose: to contribute to a climate at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø that is responsive to and supportive of women’s needs. In 2010, the name of the center was changed from the Women’s Resource Center to the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Women’s Center, as the scope of the center expanded.
Many events have been planned to celebrate and share the rich history of the Women’s Center, including:
- One Billion Rising on Feb. 15
- We Go Red: Women’s Heart Health Luncheon (co-hosted with the Division of Human Resources) on Feb. 18
- The seventh annual Mothers, Mentors and Muses event on March 8 (The honored keynote speaker is 51³Ô¹ÏÍø President Emerita Carol A. Cartwright).
- Women’s History Month Living Library on March 15
- The Vagina Monologues on April 15-16
