J. Leigh Garcia, assistant professor of print media and photography, was awarded The New Faculty Outstanding Research and Scholarship Award from 51�Թ��� for 2022. New Faculty ORSA honors exceptional researchers at 51�Թ��� who are within seven years of first becoming an assistant professor. The Outstanding Research and Scholarship Award (ORSA) is 51�Թ���'s top honor for research and scholarship. It recognizes 51�Թ���’s exceptional researchers and scholars in the sciences, humanities and the arts and celebrates their accomplishments over the course of a career.
is an artist born and raised in Dallas. Following the roots of her own biracial ancestry, Garcia explores the complex relationship between Texans and Mexicans — particularly, the racialization and displacement of unauthorized Latinx immigrants. Garcia frequently creates and exhibits work with collaborative art partners in projects such as Soñé una Milpa, We Are Women United Against Hate, and Resiliencia.
